$5.9M headed to Vicksburg National Military Park
By Alex Paton
The National Park Service will now direct more than $5.9 million to address deferred maintenance needs at the Vicksburg National Military Park.
U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, who serves on the Senate appropriations subcommittee with jurisdiction over the NPS, said the $5.9 million will address erosion and ground deterioration at the historic Vicksburg attraction.
“Overdue maintenance should not be allowed to threaten the Vicksburg National Military Park and its historic significance,” said Hyde-Smith. “I’m pleased funding has been appropriated for the National Park Service to address repairs needed to keep the Military Park safe and open over the long term.”
The funding will be dedicated to stabilizing historic areas of the park affected by erosion, including the Railroad Redoubt and the Texas State Memorial.
The FY2018 Interior Appropriations Bill encouraged the NPS “to assess on-the-ground conditions and take all necessary steps to ensure the park is safe for visitors and employees and is preserved for future generations.”
