Appropriations Subcommittee Gavels Announced in Senate

By Jennifer Shutt

Sen. Richard C. Shelby, R-Ala., who was formally ratified as Appropriations Chairman for the 116th Congress on Wednesday, laid out who will wield subcommittee gavels for the next two years. They include himself as Defense subcommittee chairman, a position he also held in the previous Congress.

The appointments of Steve Daines, R-Mont., and James Lankford, R-Okla., to the Finance Committee, after being granted waivers to remain on Appropriations, caused them to lose the gavels they held in the previous Congress — Legislative Branch and Financial Services subcommittee chairmen, respectively.

That caused some shuffling and resulted in elevating John Kennedy, R-La., to chairman of the Financial Services panel and Cindy Hyde-Smith, R-Miss., to the helm of Legislative Branch. The full list of subcommittee leaders is below.

Agriculture: John Hoeven, R-N.D.

Commerce-Justice-Science: Jerry Moran, R-Kan.

Defense: Shelby

Energy-Water: Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn.

Financial Services: Kennedy

Homeland Security: Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va.

Interior-Environment: Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska

Labor-HHS-Education: Roy Blunt, R-Mo.

Legislative Branch: Hyde-Smith

Military Construction-VA: John Boozman, R-Ark.

State-Foreign Operations: Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.

Transportation-HUD: Susan Collins, R-Maine

There is no change to the subcommittee's Democratic ranking members from the previous Congress, according to a joint release from Shelby and full committee ranking member Patrick J. Leahy, D-Vt.
