WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), chair of the Senate Pro-Life Caucus, today used a “Stand for Life” event to applaud pro-life achievements and to announce the introduction of a resolution to honor the Mississippi state law that led to the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
Hyde-Smith joined several colleagues on the Senate floor in advance of a vote to try to advance pro-life legislation ahead of the 52nd annual March for Life on Friday. In her remarks, Hyde-Smith also focused on the Mississippi Gestational Age Act, a measure introduced by State Representative Becky Currie of Brookhaven. This state law led to the 2022 U.S. Supreme Court decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
“This is an incredibly special week for pro-life Americans,” Hyde-Smith said. “We have welcomed back a life-affirming administration with the second inauguration of President Trump. Both chambers of Congress are united in our pursuit of commonsense legislation to protect the most vulnerable Americans among us with a vote on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act.”
Hyde-Smith pointed to the March for Life as a signal that the fight to protect life must continue and to take measure of what led to progress so far.
“The national March for Life always reminds us why we continue to fight for stronger protections of our unborn children and for their mothers. But, thankfully, the March also serves as a bright reminder of the progress we’ve made as a movement,” Hyde-Smith said, pointing to the Gestational Age Act.
“The entire process that brought us to the historical overturning of Roe v. Wade almost three years ago began with the introduction of a bill in the Mississippi State Legislature, called the Gestational Age Act,” the Senator added. “My dear friend, Representative Becky Currie, is responsible for introducing this legislation, which turned out to be a catalyst for such great change in our nation.”
Hyde-Smith read into the Congressional Record the text of the resolution honoring Currie. Read the resolution here.
The resolution is cosponsored by U.S. Senators Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), John Hoeven (R-S.D.), Roger Marshall, M.D. (R-Kan.), Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), and Mike Lee (R-Utah). It is also supported by March for Life Action and Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.
Following the floor speeches, a majority of Senators voted to move toward passage of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act (S.6), but enough Senator Democrats voted to filibuster the bill. Hyde-Smith is an original cosponsor of this U.S. Senator James Lankford (R-Okla.) legislation, which would prohibit a healthcare practitioner from failing to exercise the proper degree of care in the case of a child who survives an abortion or attempted abortion.
“Every baby born alive, no matter the circumstances of their birth, deserves the appropriate medical care necessary for a fighting chance to live. This measure is a critical step in ensuring these vulnerable infants are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve, and I fully support this life-affirming legislation,” Hyde-Smith said.
