Hyde-Smith votes for failed spending cut plan

U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith voted to advance President Trump’s plan to cut $15 billion in unspent or unnecessary funding from federal agencies, but the effort was cut short by Democratic-led opposition.
“I supported the President’s rescission package because it’s a sensible step to get $15 billion off the books and put it toward deficit reduction,” Hyde-Smith said. “I see this as some long overdue fiscal housecleaning. The plan deserved a full and robust debate covering the federal deficit and government spending. This should not have been a heavy lift.”
On a 48-50 procedural vote, the Senate stopped the rescission package proposed by President Trump earlier this year. The plan would have addressed a number of programs throughout the federal government. The House of Representatives approved the plan on June 7th.
In May, Hyde-Smith cosponsored legislation to amend the U.S. Constitution to require balanced budgets.
