Senators Introduce Post Traumatic Stress Resolution
Bipartisan resolution would designate this Saturday, June 27, as National Post-Traumatic Stress Awareness Day
By U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Dan Sullivan (R-AK), and Thom Tillis (R-NC)have introduced a resolution designating the month of June as National Post-Traumatic Stress Awareness Month and this Saturday, June 27, as National Post-Traumatic Stress Awareness Day. Representatives Scott Peters (D-CA), Brian Mast (R-FL), Anthony Brindisi (D-NY), and John Katko (R-NY) have introduced a companion resolution in the House.
“Our veterans and their families are facing many difficult challenges, including post-traumatic stress,” said Senator Baldwin. “The scars of combat are both seen and unseen. We must confront these problems, raise awareness of post-traumatic stress and provide our veterans and their families with the support they have earned and deserve.”
“Many of our brave men and women in uniform suffer in silence from unseen wounds of war as a result of their sacrifices on behalf of our country,” said Senator Sullivan. “The traumatic situations America’s service members experience in a warzone can disrupt their ability to carry on successfully in civilian life, pursue a career and support a family—challenges that are exacerbated by the stigma too often associated with mental illness. With this resolution, my colleagues and I offer our support for service members, veterans and others who are suffering, as well as our unyielding resolve to provide effective treatment for post-traumatic stress and ensure they can achieve the physical, mental and emotional wellness they deserve.”
“North Carolina is the proud home of nearly one million veterans, and fully honoring and caring for them requires understanding and addressing the invisible wounds of combat, including post-traumatic stress,” said Senator Thom Tillis. “I will continue to work on bipartisan solutions to make sure that our veterans and servicemembers have access to the critical support and health care services they need and deserve.”
