Legislation Fails to Get Unanimous Consent

WASHINGTON — Today, Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) went to the floor of the U.S. Senate to ask for unanimous consent for the Support and Value Expectant (SAVE) Moms and Babies Act of 2019 (S.3072).

Senator Patty Murray (D-Wash.) opposed the legislation, and the move for unanimous consent failed.

“We thank Senator Hyde-Smith for her determination to protect women and their unborn children,” said Carol Tobias, president of National Right to Life. “Sadly, pro-abortion members of the Senate are more interested in following the dictates of pro-abortion groups than in protecting women and their unborn babies.”

Because of the dangers associated with the abortion drug mifepristone, the Food and Drug Administration has applied Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS). REMS are safety strategies and protocols in place to manage the dangers associated with the drug.

In 2019, Senator Hyde-Smith introduced the Support and Value Expectant Moms and Babies Act of 2019 to prevent changes in the labeling—such as removing REMS—for already-approved abortion drugs, to prevent abortionists from prescribing abortion drugs remotely, by mail, or by telemedicine, and to prevent the Food and Drug Administration from approving new chemical abortion drugs.

“Abortion-inducing drugs are used to take the life of an innocent child and they place the mother’s life at risk,” said Tobias. “Senator Hyde-Smith’s bill would save lives, but pro-abortion Senators don’t care.”
