Former Kansas Republican Senator and 1996 GOP Presidential Nominee Bob Dole passed away Sunday in his sleep at the age of 98.

Tributes are pouring in honoring what is described as a remarkable and honorable man.

Mississippi U.S. Senator Roger Wicker said, “Bob Dole embodied what it meant to be a soldier, a legislator, and a statesman. He exemplified the greatest generation’s sense of duty and self-sacrifice, always displaying his trademark humor and optimism. I join millions of my fellow Americans in honoring the memory of this remarkable public servant. Gayle and I send our best to Elizabeth and the family.”

Mississippi U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith said, “Bob Dole led a truly remarkable life, one which will stand the test of time as an example of sacrifice, leadership, and public service. My condolences and prayers go out to Elizabeth Dole, the entire Dole family, and the many people whose lives were touched by his life.”

Dole, a World War II Veteran, was seriously wounded in combat. He received the Medal of Freedom award from then-President Bill Clinton in 1997.

He was also known for his sense of humor, which you can see around the 5:31 mark of the following video. https://youtu.be/r6obRPpPWg8

Mississippi Congressman Trent Kelly stated, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Senator Bob Dole. His service and devotion to our great Nation will always be remembered.”

The following Dole Institute of Politics video from Dole’s 1988 presidential campaign, reflects on the Senator’s humble beginnings to his storied career in public service. The video offers an intimate look at Sen. Dole’s injury during World War II, recovery and ascent in American politics. The title is a nod to the state motto of Kansas, “Ad Astra per Aspera,” Latin for “to the stars through difficulties.”

Congressman Steven Palazzo said, “America lost a great American and a war hero: Bob Dole. As the world reflects on his legacy, may we all be inspired by his patriotism and purpose.”

Palazzo shared a quote from the late statesman which seemed to sum up Dole’s long and celebrated life: “When it’s all over, it’s not who you were, it’s whether you made a difference.” Bob Dole
