Our Opinion: Your Debt, Not Ours

Mississippi’s two U.S. Senators, Roger Wicker and Cindy Hyde-Smith, have joined in a congressional effort to permanently block President Biden’s effort to cancel about $400 billion in student loans.

The loan-forgiveness scheme, already put on hold by a court challenge, is not just an executive branch overreach. It is grossly unfair to those who’d foot the bill, as both senators point out.

“The president’s plan ... is an insult to working Americans who chose to avoid student debt or have repaid it in full,” said Wicker. “This is not a ‘forgiveness’ plan. It’s an unconditional debt transfer.”

When college students took out their loans, they or their co-signers said they would be responsible for them. That’s how it should remain.
