HYDE-SMITH COSPONSORS RESOLUTION CALLING ON BIDEN TO REJOIN THE GENEVA CONSENSUS DECLARATION

Resolution Reinforces American Values of Life, Family, National Sovereignty

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.)today joined U.S. Senator Steve Daines (R-Mont.) in introducing a resolution that urges President Biden to re-add the United States as a signatory of the Geneva Consensus Declaration (GCD).

Signed three years ago today, the GCD is a landmark international agreement that affirms there is no international right to abortion and reinforces support of life, the family, and international sovereignty.  Thirty-six nations are members of the coalition.  President Biden withdrew the United States from the declaration after taking office.

“The Geneva Consensus Declaration coalition protects the sovereignty of every country to adopt national policies that promote women’s health, protect the right to life, and strengthen the family as the bedrock of society,” said Hyde-Smith, chair of the Senate Pro-Life Caucus.  “We offer this resolution to commemorate the anniversary of this global coalition, created under the leadership of President Trump, to stand united against efforts to impose an international right to abortion.”

“The Geneva Consensus Declaration represents a shared commitment to the universal principles of life, family, and national sovereignty—ideals that the American people hold dear.  On this third anniversary of the GCD, it is incredible to see 36 countries remain steadfast in this fight.  While President Biden sadly withdrew the United States from the Declaration, the American people’s commitment to protecting the most vulnerable and strengthening families remains strong, and I will continue to represent that viewpoint in the U.S. Senate,” said Daines, the former Caucus chair.

U.S. Senators James Lankford (R-Okla.), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) also cosponsored the resolution, which is available here.

Hyde-Smith and Daines were among the Senators participating in an anniversary celebration of the GCD hosted by the nonprofit Institute for Women’s Health.
