Sen. Hyde-Smith talks issues in Washington

LAUDERDALE, Miss. (WTOK) - The 2018 Farm Bill could change the lives of many Mississippians. Right now, the bill is out of the Senate Committee and has moved to the House. U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith says the bill is important for many reasons, and that's why she'll continue to push it forward.
"I serve on Ag. Appropriations Committee and we got it out of the Senate Committee sooner than we've gotten it out in many years,” says Sen. Hyde-Smith.
The goal is to expand work requirements to get more Americans off food stamps and back into the workforce.
"When I tell you that Mississippi got everything we needed in that farm bill as it stands right now, we came out very well and the needs of Mississippi are well represented there, and I am just really grateful for that,” says Sen. Hyde-Smith.
Hyde-Smith is also pushing for border security as the immigration debate continues in Washington.
The U.S. senator has traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border and says she's working with President Trump and his team to strengthen customs and border protection. She's also pushing for that controversial wall to secure the border.
"I've been in the Rio Grande River. I've been down there with a bullet-proof vest on and machine guns all the way around me. I am strongly supporting building that wall. I have talked with the farmers and the land owners there on the border, and the drug cartels are running it,” says Sen. Hyde-Smith.
The senator also stands behind the president in his pick for Supreme Court Justice nominee: Brett Kavanaugh.
Senator Hyde-Smith has personally met with Kavanaugh and says the president couldn’t have chosen a more qualified candidate.
"He knows what he's doing and he's not going to try to legislate from the bench. He knows exactly the job and duties of a Supreme Court Justice. I have all the confidence in the world that he is exactly who we need. I look forward to advocating for him.” says Sen. Hyde-Smith.
