WASHINGTON, D.C. (Mississippi News Now) - U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith issued the following statement Wednesday regarding the intention of Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, a Reagan appointee, to retire in July from the Supreme Court of the United States.

"Justice Kennedy has been a mainstay on the Supreme Court for three decades, which has given him a pivotal role in influencing the lives of all Americans. I thank him for his service and wish him well. I look forward to a vote before the end of the year on a new conservative justice to defend the Constitution."

Justice Kennedy announced he would be retiring from the Supreme Court shortly after the final announcement of the session Wednesday.

President Reagan nominated Kennedy to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1987 following a stint on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Kennedy was approved unanimously.
