MEADVILLE, Miss. – U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) today joined students and school administrators in congratulating Kristie Jones, a construction and carpentry teacher at Franklin County Career and Technical Center, on being one of five grand prize winners of the Harbor Freight Tools for Schools Prize for Teaching Excellence.

Hyde-Smith participated in a surprise award ceremony for Jones, whose work resulted in a $100,000 prize she will share with the school.

“I am so proud of Kristie and her devotion to the students she instructs,” Hyde-Smith said.  “I hope Kristie’s excellent work and dedication will shed more light on skilled trades and the opportunities they offer to change lives and build careers, not just in southwest Mississippi but across the state.”

The mission of the Harbor Freight Tools for Schools initiative is to advance excellent skilled trades education in U.S. public high schools.  The program involves honoring 20 high school skilled teachers annually, five of which are grand prize winners.
